Options for Funding Adaptations

There are a number of ways in which you could raise the money to pay for your work, including grants.

We aim to help our client to ensure all of their costs regarding work and associated fees are covered and thus avoid any unwelcome financial surprises!

Private Funds

Disabled Facilities Grant - A typical grant we help our clients to apply for is the Disabled Facilities Grant. The disabled facilities grant is a mandatory ‘means-tested’ financial grant, to help meet the cost of adapting a property (can include mobile homes or houseboats) in which a disabled adult or child lives. The adaptations must meet the specific needs of the disabled person, and those needs have to be assessed as being necessary and appropriate. Assessment is normally carried out by an occupational therapist. The proposed adaptations have to be reasonable and practicable in relation to the property. The intention is to ensure the disabled person has adequate access into and around the home and to ensure there are adequate facilities within the home.

Examples include:

Occasionally an extension to the property might be suggested to ensure the needs of the disabled person are met.

The current maximum Disabled Facilities Grant available in England is £30,000

Small Repairs Grants or loans via your local authority

Both Mole Valley and Reigate & Banstead Councils offer small repairs grants and no interest loans to assist home owners and private tenants with essential repairs. However the terms vary quite substantially over a range of assistance and it is advisable that you get in touch with us to discuss your specific requirements.

Please also see our page on repairs.

We welcome private clientele. Our bespoke service aims to serve clients with all incomes and tenures. If you can afford to pay for work yourself or have access to independent funds from any source we can arrange and oversee your work. Please see our page on Your Possibilities. Whereas grants are designed to meet your basic needs and to serve a practical purpose, you can elect to have any design or product you desire using your own funds. We are not tied to any specific product, manufacturer or supplier and are free to help you to choose from a huge range of products and services.

With choice in mind you might be eligible for grant funding but still want that special look. If you or maybe a relative are able to fund the difference in costs between what the grant will allow and what you wish for, you too could have the design and products you truly desire.

Benevolent sources of funding

Over the years we have built highly valuable partnerships with benevolent organisations who may offer financial assistance to individuals meeting their eligibility criteria. This is very useful if an applicant for a grant has not been awarded the full amount but at the same time feel they are unable to afford to contribute towards the costs themselves. We help our client to apply for further assistance through these benevolent resources.

We have developed a great relationship with SSAFA Forces Help who can assist ex service personnel and their spouses to either adapt or repair their homes. We also have access to a wide range of other options which may be of benefit to our client. Foundations Independent Living Fund (FILT) can assist applicants to improve the heating or insulation to their homes. Working in conjunction with Npower FILT offers "top up" to other sources of funding aimed at achieving greater energy efficiency in the home or to replace broken and inefficient heating. You don't have to be an Npower customer to qualify but you do need to meet certain financial or health criteria, which is typical of many benevolent resources.

We are sometimes awarded specific pots of money to help people meet their needs.

For 2013/14 we were awarded electrical safety funds which helped 10 clients to eliminate electrical hazards around the home this year. Funds targeted at helping mobile home dwellers to draught proof, improve heating or insulate helped around 30 clients. We are constantly seeking new ways to assist our client, so the advice here is to always ask and we can let you know what might be available.

Loans or equity release products

We are not at liberty to offer financial advice. However our caseworkers can help you to look at what funding options are available and help you to consider if loans or equity release products might be the right solution for you. We can point you towards organisations which do offer financial advice and who provide ethical products. For instance, we are aware of one such equity release product which starts as low as £5,000, often enough to provide a bespoke wet room adaptation. We can also assist you with making an application to you bank or other lender.
