Every business listed has undergone a series of detailed checks before being approved as a member of the scheme.

Our vision is that with our help, people can stay independent for as long as possible.

We will behave in a manner that:-

We are dedicated to helping those who are unable to manage aspects of their daily living in their home because they are feeling the effects of getting older, or have a disability. With our knowledge and experience we will design changes to individual homes that make all the difference.

Our Vision, Purpose, Values and Mission
What is a Home Improvement Agency?
How can my local Home Improvement Agency help?
Are there any costs?

Every home improvement agency offers a range of services. This help can include some or all of the following:

For some examples of how home improvement agencies can help, read our case studies.

You are under no obligation during our first visit to you. Neither are you asked to make a decision straight away. However, HIAs usually charge a fee if you decide to go ahead with any work using their assistance.  Fees can normally be included with any grant you are eligible for.

It is your decision whether you want the home improvement agency to help with arranging your proposed work, and any costs will be discussed and agreed with you first.

Home Improvement Agencies (HIAs) help those who may struggle to manage elements of daily living at home. HIAs are often supported by Government and local authorities and are not for profit organisations. HIAs offer information, advice and support. This is often to older clients to repair or improve to their homes, or provide the assistance of a handyperson for minor adaptations, repairs or gardening.

The HIA will assess their client’s needs and advise on practical, financial and legal matters related to adapting the home, repairing, improving or insulating it.

A key purpose of Home Improvement Agencies is to help elderly people continue to live as independently as possible in their own home regardless of whether they are home owners or tenants.

Independent Home Solutions is a Home Improvement Agency based in Surrey

Surrey has 11 Home Improvement Agencies (HIAs) working to provide advice, adaptations and repairs services for clients of all ages and tenures. Surrey County Council has worked closely with the network of HIAs to expand services across the County. Individual HIAs have also formed partnerships with their own Local Authorities and with other Surrey organisations to develop a range of quality, reliable services which might differ from area to area.

HIAs support people to maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.  Our prime specialisation is carrying out adaptations to our clients’ homes, or helping to arrange essential repairs and maintenance. Nationally there is a strong body of evidence indicating the importance of HIAs in preventing accidents and deterioration of physical and mental health. (CLG Lifetime Homes Lifetime neighbourhoods)

Adapting a home to suit specific needs can mean a home which allows an individual to play a full role in society, being able to bathe, cook and get in and out of the house, all being necessary for a person to engage with the wider world of education, employment, community and family life.  Some of the services which HIAs provides support their Councils in discharging statutory functions as with Disabled Facilities Grants, or bespoke and complementary services which utilise the experience and skills of employees.

Handyperson services provide quick response and low cost minor repairs and adaptations. Jobs can include minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical work or fitting grab rails, small ramps and other minor adaptations as well as security measures such as key safes, locks and door chains. These provide very cost-effective solutions and preventions, keeping people safe in their homes, maintaining independence and improving quality of life.

Our History

The Anchor Staying Put Home Improvement Agency was established for many years in Reigate and Banstead and Mole Valley. However, the existing team of employees formed Independent Home Solutions CIC when Anchor Staying Put ceased operations in March 2011. Our Social Enterprise HIA is registered as a Community Interest Company and offers personalised advice and support with home adaptations and repairs. We aim to provide peace of mind for our discerning client with our quality of service, trustworthiness and fair dealings. We will offer access to vetted, competent and dependable contractors and trades people.

We also recognise the challenges faced by families with a disabled child who would benefit from bespoke long lasting adaptations for their growing needs. With medical advances, more youngsters are living longer with disabilities that they once may not have survived and so longer term appropriate adaptations should be carefully co-ordinated with input from the family, the care and health services. Our team has excellent experience in these kinds of adaptations.
